Project Description
Project Scope
The goal of this project was to create a logo for a fictitious company. For this project I needed to come up with a simplistic logo that could be wrapped on several objects and create a brand identity.
Brand Identity
The brand I created is called space. Space is a open workplace in the heart of downtown Vancouver. It’s a charity foundation that provides a open tech workspace connecting talent and passion with opportunity. I stuck with black and white as the Primary colours because I want the brand to come off as sophisticated, elegant, clean, strong and dependable.
Brainstorming & Conception
designing this logo I used a thick sharpie to avoid creating small details that are lost when the logo is scaled down to smaller sizes.
I created a typeface board to determine the best typeface for my Wordmark, I then narrowed down the selection further by tracking and kerning the lettering.
I played around with the concept of open space and strayed away from any designs that were overcomplicating the design. I like to keep the design simple and get rid of everything thats not essential.
Refining the Brand
after settling on the logo design I applied it to several objects using different techniques in photoshop and illustrator like vanishing point, distort, warp, perspective grid and mockup templates.
One of the things I liked about the typography being inside the box was it made the application of the logo as a wrapper possible like on the box. The only issue with that design though is legibility when its scaled down.
Design
I then created 4 posters for the company before settling on a design for print. The final design uses powerful imagery, open space and a fine-tuned limit colour palette to evoke a feeling. The message of the design ill leave for you to decide.
This project made me curious about different techniques around wrapping an object, I now know how to create mockups for other designs and this led me creating several mockups for menu boards.
the other benefit was the idea it helped foster for another one of my portfolio projects that you can checkout here (FontBoard).
